About Contemporary
Have you ever seen a dance piece that is a concoction of multiple dance elements and styles but you just can't seem to put your finger on what the exact genre is?
Now, that is most likely Contemporary dance!
Contemporary dance is a genre that combines elements from multiple genres such as modern dance, jazz, lyrical, classical ballet and even urban. The overall idea is to connect the envisioned idea and body through improvisation and versatile movements. Contemporary dance is a genre that developed during the mid-twentieth century and has continuously grown to be one of the most popular dance genres today. A commonality among famous contemporary dancers/choreographers is their determination to challenge the strict norms of classical ballet. Pioneers such as Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham have made their names by breaking the rules of classical ballet and creating a new genre that embraces free and unrestricted movements.
