About Hip hop
Stay Connected
You may have heard of the term “hip-hop” in various contexts, with all roads leading back to its connections to hip-hop culture. However, even within a dance context, the complex term carries more than just a singular definition.
Hip-hop has been a popular, mainstream style of dance since the late 1980s. While technically a type of Street dance, UCL’s Hip-hop is usually distinguished from the Commercial Street style. In that sense, Hip-hop is also closely associated with breaking, locking, popping, urban, jazz funk and other specialized forms of dance. Fun fact, freestyling and dance battles are both products of Hip-hop culture! While it’s difficult to dilute a dance style into one universal definition, Hip-hop choreographers/dancers tend to incorporate hard-hitting moves that tend to match the distinct rhythm, melody and texture of their music.
